When it comes to caffeine, are liquids the only option? Gregory Brown, a successful film and television music producer, didn’t think so. During one of his late-night shifts, he came up with a revolutionary idea: caffeinated cereal.  With help from the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), Brown launched Prancing Tastebud LLC, catering to creatives, students, and gig workers looking for an easy-to-eat, energizing snack.

Creating such an innovative product wasn’t without challenges. Brown navigated setbacks, including testing sub-par samples, pandemic restrictions, and equipment issues. However, his SBDC advisor, Karen Blackwell, provided crucial guidance. “The accountability and her expertise in the specialized food manufacturing industry have been invaluable,” says Brown, who proudly recommends SBDC to others.

Today, Brown has an interesting product with various flavors like Pawpis Mocha Energy. It’s a coffee-based cereal that boasts approximately 75mg of caffeine per serving, equivalent to a shot of espresso. It also has protein and low sugar for those on low-carb diets or struggling with diabetes.

Since starting, Brown has also gained the confidence to collaborate with experienced co-manufacturers. He partnered with YouBar for a sample run, generating thousands in sales and creating new roles. Now, backed by Zerret and an angel investor, Prancing Tastebud is poised for larger production runs, continuing to energize a hungry customer base of go-getters with this fun, alternative snack. You can find them at pop-up events all over the LA County area. So if you’re in the mood for a quick pick-me-up while you’re on the go, keep an eye out for Prancing Tastebud.

I found the accountability of having my advisor check in with me on a regular basis extremely valuable.  But the most important thing has been her expertise on things pertaining to the food manufacturing industry which is highly specialized. I highly recommend the advising services, and actually have done so for a couple of friends
